Appleton Common Council District 6 Update for May 6, 2027

Greetings District 6 Neighbors, I want to go on record that when I moved to Wisconsin, it was drilled into my head that I couldn’t plant anything outside until Mother’s Day. Well, here we are, four days away, and my weather app keeps reminding me of a frost advisory for tonight. Enough already! On that note, we have one more week of spring yard waste pickup. We’re back on a normal schedule, so the first Wednesday of the month means a full council meeting. We’ll start the meeting with the presentation of the gavel to outgoing Council President Van Zeeland, who served for four terms starting in 2022. I am personally grateful to her for a number of measures she took including making sure that alderpersons were aware of and invited to city events and developing a process for training new alderpersons. There will be a presentation of Appleton Police Department Civilian Medals of Gallantry to Mason Knott and Tori Schoen. The council will vote on the mayor’s recommendation of Mitesh Ajm...

Greetings, District 6 Neighbors, Could it be, could it be that spring is really here? I see the trees leafing out; we have a couple of tulips blooming and I hear my husband getting quotes on mulch, but I still don’t trust it. While on the subject of spring, remember that we have three more spring yard waste pickups scheduled. If you want to take yard waste to the collection sites, remember that the Glendale site is open Friday – Monday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and the Whitman site is open Tuesday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. All yard waste other than grass clippings can be dropped off without charge; grass clippings are $4.00 per 30-gallon bag. We’re ending an odd month schedule-wise for the Common Council. Because state law and our city code determine the election date and the date that newly elected and re-elected alders are sworn in, we only had a couple of committee meetings last week, along with our informal organizational meeting and the formal organizational meeting. The remain...

Greetings District 6 Neighbors, Happy Tax Day to those who celebrate (accountants, maybe?) Apparently, Mother Nature ignored my request last week for boring weather. At least it’s warm (for a while) and it doesn’t appear that we are going to have a repeat of the April blizzard of 2018, which started eight years ago today. We wind down the 2025-2026 council year this week, with our final meeting on tonight (Wednesday, April 15) However, the 2026-2027 council will be the same, with Alders Meltzer and Heffernan having won their elections. There hasn’t been a year with zero turnover in the council since 2019 when I was first elected, and my longer-serving colleagues don’t remember any years where there were no changes, either. I’ll refrain from my normal plea for more participation in local government. The re-elected alders will be sworn in on April 21 at 5:00 p.m. in Fox Commons. After the swearing in, we’ll hold an informal organizational meeting, where we will discuss any council ...

Greetings District 6 Neighbors, Could we possibly have a dull weather week? Mild temperatures and a little sunshine? I hope everyone who celebrates had a wonderful Easter or Passover and was able to spend some special time with family and friends. We finally got a little sunshine yesterday, so maybe the egg hunts could go on. With regards to the ice storm last week, I’ve reached out to the Department of Public Service to find out if there are plans for a pickup of debris. There were trucks out in the days after the storm, but I imagine that the primary focus in those early hours was to remove limbs that blocked roadways or threatened power lines. I’ll share when I have more information. When I wrote last week ahead of the council meeting, I neglected to note that we would be hearing from the winners of the Sidewalk Poetry Contest. I always enjoy hearing the selected poems read by the authors, and I’m sure they look forward to seeing their words gracing a city sidewalk. ...
