Appleton Common Council District 6 Update for June 17, 2026

Greetings District 6 Neighbors, Whew! What a weekend! There was so much going on around town that it seems impossible to even list it all, much less to participate in all of the events. I started my Saturday with the Bellin 10K in Green Bay. It was the 50th anniversary, so the field was large than normal – over 10,000 runners and walkers making their way through the streets of Green Bay and Allouez. After that, it was home for a quick change and out to the Flag Day Parade. The sheer number of entries made the new shorter route a little strange – those of us at the start of the parade were finished long before the later entries even left the staging area. I have heard some questions about the route change. There were a number of reasons that the difficult decision was made. Security is always a consideration – with the number of activities happening on any given Saturday during the summer, APD is stretched pretty thin. Some of the veterans who participate in our parades are getting olde...

Appleton Common Council District 6 Update for June 8, 2026

Greetings District 6 Neighbors, Last week’s Common Council meeting was fairly short. The item that I expected to generate some discussion, the creation of Tax Increment District #14 for the Thrivent property development, was held for a future council meeting. I understand that there is a development agreement in process for part of the property and that city staff wishes for the items to be taken up together. Both the City Plan Commission and the Community Development Committee have cancelled meetings for this week, so I expect that it will be later in the summer that we take up the TID. As expected, Alder Croatt submitted a resolution that the Safety and Licensing Committee “ shall review all options related to the existing truancy ordinance language and the trial period and possibly take action on options presented by Legal Services.” As I noted last week, if the council takes no action, the ordinance will sunset on June 30. We are expecting additional data from AASD now that the sc...

Greetings District 6 Neighbors, Happy last week of school to all the AASD students, faculty and staff and congratulations to all the seniors who received their diplomas over the past couple of weeks. I know the Xavier system other than high school finished up last week.  Don’t forget to check out the Parks and Recreation Department for fun summer activities for kiddos of all ages, from the Playground Program happening all summer at parks throughout the city to summer sports camps, swimming lessons and Friday Fun for the littlest explorers. Find them all here: Appleton Parks and Recreation This is a full council week, and with the cancellation of the Appleton Public Arts Committee meeting, that is the only meeting for the week. We’ll start with the mayor’s recommendation to promote Deputy Director Tom Flick to Director. Tom has served as interim director since Dean Gazza’s retirement. He has been with the city since 2015. Summer is a busy proclamation time, and we have a number for ...

Greetings District 6 Neighbors, I hope everyone enjoyed the Memorial Day weekend and that some of you got to see the parade or took a moment at 3:00 yesterday afternoon to remember those that gave their lives in military service to our country. We got a reminder because we were listening to the Brewer game and the game/broadcast paused. While Memorial Day is supposed to mark the unofficial first day of summer, the weather app tells me that summer is here. Did we have spring? I’m glad I got all my flowers planted over the weekend when it wasn’t quite so beastly. Did someone say “pool weather?” The Mead pool is having a bonus weekend this Saturday and Sunday, then both polls open for the summer on June 5. Summer swim passes are available online (new this year) or you can buy them at the customer service center at 1819 E. Witzke Blvd. (they have moved back into their permanent location after a stint at the Scheig Center during remodeling). Punch cards will be available at both pools after...
