Appleton Common Council District 6 Update for June 8, 2026

Greetings District 6 Neighbors, Last week’s Common Council meeting was fairly short. The item that I expected to generate some discussion, the creation of Tax Increment District #14 for the Thrivent property development, was held for a future council meeting. I understand that there is a development agreement in process for part of the property and that city staff wishes for the items to be taken up together. Both the City Plan Commission and the Community Development Committee have cancelled meetings for this week, so I expect that it will be later in the summer that we take up the TID. As expected, Alder Croatt submitted a resolution that the Safety and Licensing Committee “ shall review all options related to the existing truancy ordinance language and the trial period and possibly take action on options presented by Legal Services.” As I noted last week, if the council takes no action, the ordinance will sunset on June 30. We are expecting additional data from AASD now that the sc...

Greetings District 6 Neighbors, Happy last week of school to all the AASD students, faculty and staff and congratulations to all the seniors who received their diplomas over the past couple of weeks. I know the Xavier system other than high school finished up last week.  Don’t forget to check out the Parks and Recreation Department for fun summer activities for kiddos of all ages, from the Playground Program happening all summer at parks throughout the city to summer sports camps, swimming lessons and Friday Fun for the littlest explorers. Find them all here: Appleton Parks and Recreation This is a full council week, and with the cancellation of the Appleton Public Arts Committee meeting, that is the only meeting for the week. We’ll start with the mayor’s recommendation to promote Deputy Director Tom Flick to Director. Tom has served as interim director since Dean Gazza’s retirement. He has been with the city since 2015. Summer is a busy proclamation time, and we have a number for ...

Greetings District 6 Neighbors, I hope everyone enjoyed the Memorial Day weekend and that some of you got to see the parade or took a moment at 3:00 yesterday afternoon to remember those that gave their lives in military service to our country. We got a reminder because we were listening to the Brewer game and the game/broadcast paused. While Memorial Day is supposed to mark the unofficial first day of summer, the weather app tells me that summer is here. Did we have spring? I’m glad I got all my flowers planted over the weekend when it wasn’t quite so beastly. Did someone say “pool weather?” The Mead pool is having a bonus weekend this Saturday and Sunday, then both polls open for the summer on June 5. Summer swim passes are available online (new this year) or you can buy them at the customer service center at 1819 E. Witzke Blvd. (they have moved back into their permanent location after a stint at the Scheig Center during remodeling). Punch cards will be available at both pools after...

Greetings District 6 Neighbors, I want to go on record that when I moved to Wisconsin, it was drilled into my head that I couldn’t plant anything outside until Mother’s Day. Well, here we are, four days away, and my weather app keeps reminding me of a frost advisory for tonight. Enough already! On that note, we have one more week of spring yard waste pickup. We’re back on a normal schedule, so the first Wednesday of the month means a full council meeting. We’ll start the meeting with the presentation of the gavel to outgoing Council President Van Zeeland, who served for four terms starting in 2022. I am personally grateful to her for a number of measures she took including making sure that alderpersons were aware of and invited to city events and developing a process for training new alderpersons. There will be a presentation of Appleton Police Department Civilian Medals of Gallantry to Mason Knott and Tori Schoen. The council will vote on the mayor’s recommendation of Mitesh Ajm...
