Appleton Common Council District 6 Update for February 23, 2026

Image
Photo From Appleton Downtown Greetings, District 6 Neighbors, I confess that I am writing this from sunny Phoenix, AZ where today’s high temperature is expected to equal a record. We planned this long weekend during the stretch of brutally cold weather around the first of the month and I’m certainly grateful to be here rather than in the Northeast (or even home) right now. Crossing our fingers that the weather doesn’t cause a big mess that affects our return home tomorrow. Last week’s council meeting was brief as expected. The only item separated from the agenda was the parking change on College Avenue in front of Memorial Presbyterian Church – and that was only so that we could thank city staff, in particular the Traffic Engineer, for clarifying the resolution. We have a full slate of committee meetings this week, with only the Parks and Recreation Committee canceling their meeting on Monday. A committee meeting is cancelled if there is no business that requires committee and council ...

Greetings, District 6 Neighbors, Looking out at the bright sunshine, I’m almost glad to see the forecast calling for a return to freezing temperatures for the weekend so that the Avenue of Ice carvings can last for the full weekend. Appleton Downtown, Inc. has a list of sculpture locations and a link to Downtown Frosty Finds, in partnership with the Fox Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau. Downtown Frosty Finds has discounts at a number of downtown businesses. Check them both out here:  Avenue of Ice Carvings - Appleton Downtown Inc. I’m hopeful that a few days of warmer weather will make getting outside less of an ordeal. As expected, last week’s Common Council meeting was quite short, with only the Northland-Bellaire Flood Study proposal being separated for individual discussion and voting. The comments from council members were all supportive of the engineering study that would precede the work discussed in last week’s update. Even though the initial work would not make any changes to the infrastructure in District 6, we should benefit from the proposed Northland Avenue sewer improvements. As we move into a committee week, Monday will be the only day with a full slate of meetings. The Fox Cities Transit Commission, City Plan Commission, Community Development Committee and Human Resources and Information Technology Committee will not be meeting this week. Municipal ...
