District 6 Update, January 12, 2021
Good afternoon District 6,
I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday and is beginning
2021 with optimism.
As expected, the agenda for the Common Council meeting last
week was light, as most committees did not meet during the holiday week.
During the COVID 19 update, Health Officer Eggebrecht
discussed the hiring of Julie Lederhaus as the vaccine coordinator for the City
of Appleton. She served as the public health preparedness coordinator from 2003 to 2007,
bringing experience with the development of the department’s mass vaccination
plan at during that period. As I was writing this, I got notice that the city
has begun vaccinating eligible city employees, including police, fire,
emergency medical service providers and unaffiliated health care providers. We
had seen a flattening in the number of new cases at our last meeting, but we have
since seen the expected increase that has been attributed to holiday gatherings.
You may
have already heard that the COVID testing site in Appleton has moved to the Fox
Cities Exposition Center. With students returning to the classroom next week,
Appleton North High School will need their parking lot again, and an indoor
location is better suited to the elements. However, the indoor location means
that appointments will be required. You can call (920)832-6345 or go to https://www.appleton.org/residents/health/regional-covid-19-testing-site
for more information or to make an appointment.
In other
business from the meeting, there were some budget adjustments to record grant
agreement modifications from the Department of Human Services. These are CARES
act funds for testing, planning and contact tracing – a total of $582,616.
You can read
the full minutes of the meeting and watch the video on the city Legistar page:
I thought I would have some news about the HOPE photo
contest, the contract for the Edison Street trestle bridge and repairs to the
Soldiers Square monument, but there were technical issues during the Parks and
Recreation Committee meeting last night, forcing those items to be held until
the next meeting. Our Zoom life continues into 2021, it seems.
If the winter doldrums are starting to set in already, check
out the Parks and Recreation website for adult and children’s programs, in
addition to the winter recreation opportunities in the parks (let it snow!) I’m
taking a yoga class and the Strong Bodies class at the Scheig Center in
Memorial Park. Class sizes are limited, and we wear masks and observe distancing
protocols. The Tuesday yoga class is being offered via Zoom as well as in person.

For the creative folks, Public Works Director Vandehey has
asked us to remind people of the sidewalk poetry contest. You could see your
work in stone (or at least concrete). I am attaching the fact sheet. Submissions
will be accepted through February 19th.
Don’t forget curbside Christmas tree pickup this week on the
normal trash day, or you can take your Christmas tree to the Glendale yard
waste site and get your “tree for a tree” coupon. The coupon is redeemable in
April for a white spruce seedling. Either way, make sure to take all the
decorations and lights off of the tree and don’t put it in a plastic bag.
Stay safe and look
forward to better times.
GO PACK!!!
