Appleton Common Council District 6 Update for the Week of July 15, 2024

Greetings District 6 Neighbors,

Sadly, I am hearing about more of our neighbors who have been impacted by the flooding on July 5 and July 13. I’m posing a link to a video from Mayor Woodford where he updates us on the forecast for possibly more severe weather this afternoon and evening.

There is a new city page that contains information about the July 5 event – I expect it will be updated soon to add information about the Saturday flooding.

While city staff are still investigating what resources may be available for those impacted by the flooding as a result of Governor Evers’s emergency declaration, Mayor Woodford noted in this morning's update that it still appears that the flooding in Appleton might not meet the qualifications for state aid. The city is still working with other organizations to determine if other sources of aid are available.

I am working with the Department of Public Works to catalog all the places in District 6 that were impacted as DPW and the Stormwater Utility will be reviewing system engineering and identifying future projects to improve the system, so please let me know if you were in an area that had flooding either on July 5th or July 13th.

Moving to this week’s Common Council meeting – while we will have two weeks of committee agendas, I don’t think that there will be too many items that will result in a ton of discussion.

We’ll have the presentation of awards for the Flag Day Parade, and the mayor will present several proclamations:

·       Make Music Day

·       Children’s Week

·       Glioblastoma Awareness Day

·       Parks & Recreation Month

There will be a public hearing on the rezoning of a couple of lots on Amelia and Owaissa St. The rezoning is to allow a lot line adjustment that would make the lots too small for the current zoning. We’ll also vote on the associated action item.

I expect another discussion on No Mow May. The Municipal Services Committee passed an alternate resolution 3-2 that would end the month-long moratorium on enforcement of the tall vegetation ordinance in favor of allowing vegetation to be higher (from 8 inches to 10 inches). This would allow people to leave dandelions, violets, etc. that can attract early season pollinators without causing some of the issues we had with extremely high vegetation during the warmer, wetter spring weather we

have been having.

Most of the other items on the agenda are relatively straightforward and passed without much discussion in their respective committee meetings. You can review the discussion of the committee items in the last two updates here:

Have a great (and drier) week!
