As fate would have it, a few seconds after I hit "SEND" on the last redistricting update, I received an e-mail from the City Clerk's office advising of yet another set of options.
It was very clear in the last redistricting committee meeting that most of the committee was not terribly satisfied with the fact that the plan they had voted on the week before no longer met the requirements pertaining to population deviation across aldermanic districts. Faced with only one option that they were told met the requirements, they voted to approve that option (Option D from the last e-mail).
Seeing that no one was really happy with what had happened on last week, the City Clerk's team went to work and came up with two more options, both of which met the population deviation requirement. Option E was based on the old Option A, which most people seemed to like because it stayed reasonably close to the original ward boundaries but had more than the 10% limit on population deviation across districts. Option F was based on Option D.
The committee is meeting again this afternoon to review the options again. We need to vote on this at the full council meeting this Wednesday or at the very latest November 3 in order to allow the ordinances to be drafted and the City Clerk's office to be prepared for nomination papers that need to be submitted in December for the spring election.
I am attaching all the options from the agenda and highlighting the District 6 impact of the options here:
Option A - basically leaves the district intact other than the neighborhood across from Festival and the south side of Ridgeview.
Option D: old ward 17 is moved out of District 6; Northland Mall and adjacent neighborhood added back, along with some new area south of Northland Ave.
New Option E: Old ward 17 (between Meade and Ballard and Northland and Capitol including Memorial Park) is no longer in District 6. Neighborhood west of Mason and north of Northland is included, along with the area west of Richmond and between Lindbergh and Mason south of Northland. Moves the current boundary of old Ward 50 east to Morrison.
Option F: Restores the old Ward 17 to District 6 and leaves the area west of Mason and north of Northland, along with the Northland Mall area north to I41. Moves the southern edge north to Glendale in the old Ward 50. (this moves me into District 1, along with current District 14 Alderperson Prohaska and current District 1 Alderperson Siebers.)
If you have thoughts, please contact me. The meeting is this afternoon at 3:45. It will be livestreamed here:
