District 6 "5th week" update and request for input
Hello neighbors,
We are in what I think of as the last week of summer, regardless of the "official" first day of autumn. We have the Labor Day weekend coming up and schools have either started or will be starting in the next few days. We are also in the middle of a "fifth week" in Common Council life, where we have no scheduled council or committee meetings. By the Council rules, meetings are the first and third Wednesday of the month, with committee meetings happening the week after the council meeting.
INPUT REQUESTED – Please let me know what you think of these proposed changes:
We’ll be back in session on September 5th, where one of the items on the agenda will be a resolution recommended for approval by the Municipal Services Committee last Monday. The resolution called for changes to the policy governing plantings on street terraces (the area between the sidewalk and curb). It was referred to city staff, where the following changes to the existing policy were recommended:
The intent is to allow people to plant flowers or even vegetable gardens in the terrace area as long as they comply with the policy above. Because we are phasing in the vacuum leaf collection (note that much of our district will be in the first phase of this process – see diagram below) where leaves will be placed on the terrace for pickup, the new policy requires that plantings be removed before the first collection.
Some of this planting has always been allowed; it required a permit and a fee, requirements that will still be in place for exceptions noted above.
The Post-Crescent ran a story about the proposal here: Post Crescent Story
Because I heard from some folks that they didn’t get the Public Works Guide in the mail, or no longer have it – I’m linking the electronic version here: Public Works Guide
